The preferred method for tile installations is to use a sheet of underlayment.
Ceramic tile over 3 4 plywood.
The tile guys used thin set mortar to glue down 3 4 plywood over the subfloor and they screwed the plywood to the subfloor every 3 in all directions.

For wall installations plywood is overkill beneath the concrete or fiber board which is designed in five eighths inch material for wall settings.
Secondly i would never tile directly over the plywood as this video seems to imply is acceptable.
Space the field and edge fasteners correctly the top layer of plywood should be screwed down every 8 inches on the edge and every 6 inches in the field or interior section.
However i did find that the previous installer had put another sheet of 1 2 plywood over the 3 4 inch plywood subfloor.
